Charge into battle with the Skryim 1.6 update

Bethesda have announced that in update 1.6 for Skyrim they will be introducing mounted combat following its teasing in the Skyrim Game Jam video shown off earlier this year at DICE 2012.  This is a free title update for all platforms and will see players now able to use melee and ranged weapons, thus making horses more useful.  Now we just need to see Bethesda implementing horses for companions so we don’t have to wait for them to constantly catch up as we ride into the sunset.

PC users are able to try out the highly requested mounted combat now by opting into the Steam Beta Update via the settings menu in Steam, while news on the Xbox 360 and PS3 release dates are yet to be announced.  Check out the full patch notes after the break. Continue Reading

Last week LudoCraft released the 0.60 Alpha update for AirBuccaneers HD.  This is their biggest update so far and includes a new map called Trollivuono, new post process effects for the game and XP is now accumulated for both player’s characters equally.

LudoCraft have told us that this will be the game’s last major Alpha release before the Beta, but they will keep releasing smaller updates and fixes in the meantime.  Check out the full patch notes after the break. Continue Reading

Legend of Grimrock Editor Preview

It’s Friday! Which means that not only is Rebecca Black dancing, but there has been another blog update to the old-style dungeon crawler, Legend of Grimrock.

A preview screenshot (below) has been released of the much anticipated (by me, at least) Dungeon Editor. There is still no release date, and it “is still pretty far from final but we wanted to give this early sneak peak anyway” said coder, petri.

Unsurprisingly, the editor looks great. It looks pretty simple to make a dungeon, hopefully leading to a lot of interesting creations when it gets released.

DOTA 2 Championships Announced

Nothing to do with Warcraft, honest.

Valve have announced the dates for the second year of the International Dota 2 Championships which will take place over the weekend 31st August – 2nd September. Will Ukrainian team Na’Vi retain their title [1] and take the $1m prize? Thanks to Valve’s attempts to make the game spectator friendly the whole world will be able to watch online like last year, I’m hopeful those of us lucky to be in the beta (or everyone if it is released by that point) will even be able to use the brilliant in game spectator features to watch, but if not there will no doubt be the live stream, with commentary for those who have no idea what is going on.

[1] I wanted to say belt, I don’t think there is a belt but there should be and it should give the wearer +6 Strength.

It looks like the Xbox 360 will be getting another step closer to becoming the ultimate ‘entertainment hub’ with rumours abound of Microsoft working on an actual internet browser for the console.

According to the Verge website, Microsoft is currently testing the new browser, which will use a modified version IE9 and will make use of Kinect gestures and voice controls.

There already is an online search function – Bing for Xbox – but that isn’t the same as browsing the internet, and, to be honest, it’s about time the Xbox had a proper web browser.

Announcing our new logo

Posted by AJ on May 4, 2012

We’re proud to announce our new logo for Gaming and Tech Network.  After some planning and time, we’ve decided upon the logo you can see to the right which we hope will become recognisable as our symbol as we continue to grow.  Rather than continuing to stray down the previous logos path of being text heavy we’ve tried to take a minimalistic approach with something which is a little different and we hope will stand out.

We’ve also spent considerable time looking at different colour schemes and layouts for the site and in the end we chose this design.  We feel this makes the site clearer to read and makes things stand out more than our previous design.  We’ll be looking to improve it slowly in the future, so keep an eye out for subtle changes.

Let us know your thoughts on the new design for the site and the logo in the comments below.

A Moustache on the Mona Lisa

Are video games art? If you had asked me the question 5 years ago I would have pointed you in the direction of The Orange Box. It included three games all made using the same engine, all made by the same developer, but with wildly different art styles. The developer commentary (particularly that with Team Fortress 2) suggested that this was no fluke and Valve really knew what they were doing. Later they released Left 4 Dead and, again, despite the same engine and same developers it was very different to the three games in The Orange Box. The developer commentary in the game talked about art direction and how colour and light was used to direct the player where they wanted them to go without adding noticeable boundaries. Back then I would have said that Valve were at the top of their game and that they alone could prove that video games could be art. Each of their games, from the (two very different) post apocalyptic worlds of Half-Life and Left 4 Dead to the clean clinical lines of Portal and the cell shaded alternate 60s of Team Fortress 2, each of them tells a story through the visuals alone, each of the characters can be understood before they even speak just by looking at them. I would have argued that not only can video games be art with these games as my sole evidence, but that Valve had a better understanding of art direction than nearly any (current) Hollywood film director.

Then it all went wrong.

Bethesda announce Skyrim: Dawnguard

So, Bethesda Softworks have finally announced the first DLC/expansion pack/add-on to Skyrim, named Dawnguard.  They haven’t released any details other than to post the image below onto their blog with the words “Coming this summer to Xbox 360. More details at E3.“

Judging by that we’ll have to wait for more details to be revealed about Dawnguard at E3, although we do know that they’ve confirmed that it will be a timed release on the Xbox 360 with the PC and PS3 platforms no doubt following afterwards.  Not too long to wait until E3 which is taking place on June 5th-7th this year.

See the original post on the Bethesda Softworks blog here.

Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing Transformed Announced!

Today SEGA announced a sequel to their great kart racer Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing Transformed! The first game was excellent and a refreshing title to add to our racing collection because a good kart racer is something that is hard to come by if it isn’t Mario Kart. This time around the karts will be switching to air and water along with land, less like Diddy Kong Racing and more like Mario Kart 7. Hopefully the game will be better than what the trailer shows.
