Mafia 2 Review

The sequel to the 2002 game, made by a little company called Illusion Softworks. Mafia was received as a Grand Theft Auto-esque game except a bit more serious, with a refreshing plate of realism.

Now: Illusion Softworks is better known as 2K Czech (under 2K Games), and Mafia 2 was released back in August – so, does it live up?

After being such a fan of Mafia-Prime, I was surprised when I convinced myself not to bother with the sequel, but after the STEAM sales (when it was knocked down to £4.99 – whoo) – I changed my mind.

Right. Now the obligatory introduction is out of the way, here’s the GOOD bits about Mafia 2, and to kick things off: the story. Continue Reading

Magic: The Gathering Review

Posted by John Mahoney on January 22, 2011

First – Magic: the Gathering TCG

I’m not exactly what you’d call a ‘long-term’ player of MTG. In fact, the cool person I am, I started playing the actual card game when I started at University along with a few friends (making four so we could do two-headed giant).

As a card game, MTG is the longest-running and most successful, originally being created by a mathematician in the early 90s. And it is great fun! I’ll give you the general scenario in which I started (only initials have been used to keep identities safe):

I convinced everyone to get MTG: Duels of the Planeswalkers (DotP) (the video-game available on STEAM and the Xbox 360 Live Marketplace), and we each got a page that entitled us to get a free deck of cards in a local shop (there happened to be one in the town I started at Uni).

So, J and I (who were the only two to go to Uni – the same one) went into town to get our cards, which we were disappointed to find was only 30 cards each, but enough to play against each other.

I started with Blue, J had White, T on Black and D on Green. At first, my Blue was fairing pretty well against them, unfortunately I’ve struggled to keep up to par for a long time, until recently when I’ve redone my deck (with a Jace Beleren – my muse) and now they get rather angry when we play, which just makes it all the more fun.

To whatever end: the game is fun. All four of us are still avid players of the actual card game (occasionally MTG: DotP too) and still meet up weekly to play. Continue Reading

GTN’s Top 10 anticipated games of 2011 – Part 2

Welcome to the second part of our top ten anticipated games of 2011.  If you missed the first part you can find it here.

6. Crysis 2

Crysis was an excellent game, having the suit that allowed you to change your body’s capabilities depending on the situation, whether it was going invisible, or running very fast, or simply becoming super strong so you can bash through buildings behind the enemy. It was a great mechanic and way of doing things. I am therefore looking forward to Crysis 2, mostly for the multiplayer, because that could be great fun and I hold out much hope!

GTN’s Top 10 anticipated games of 2011 – Part 1

We have come up with a list of our top ten most anticipated games of 2011.  Over the next two days you will find out about why we think these games will rock 2011 and with a wide range of games in our list we hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed writing it.

1. Batman: Arkham City

Batman: Arkham Asylum, in my opinion, re-wrote the Batman franchise for the new generation of gamers. Being the first real successful Batman game, it was recieved with open arms by critics from all round, being named ‘Best Superhero game’ by many (including IGN).

Batman is my hero, I’ve been a fan of the franchise for as long as I can remember, and I was really impressed by Arkham Asylum because of how it incorporated so much history and references, and I’m sure Arkham City will be no different, with it including the likes of Catwoman and the nefarious and underrated Hugo Strange.

An exciting set of news today focusing mainly on the upcoming FPS Homefront and World of Warcraft gets played by a man waving his arms around using Kinect.  Welcome to the first Hot Press of 2011…enjoy!

A dedicated Homefront:

Kaos, the studio behind upcoming FPS Homefront, have announced that there will be dedicated servers in multiplayer for their game on the PC, 360 and PS3 with support of up to 32 players whilst also providing the opportunity for PC players to set up their own local servers.  They believe that dedicated servers are vital for games providing large scale online multiplayer experiences as they reduce the amount of lag, support more players and are more reliable than games which rely on being hosted by a local player.  Jeremy Greiner, the Community Manager for Kaos had this to say in a recent interview to CVG.com:

GTN’s Hot Press – Gaming 23/12/10

Two big pieces of news today of which one will surely be a sigh of relief for PC gamers and among all of that we have some smaller bits of news to digest too!

Microsoft’s Windows 8 to be at the forefront of a new approach to PC gaming?

It all started with Microsoft’s recent overhaul of the Games for Windows Marketplace and then the announcement of a new Age of Empires, a new Flight Simulator and Fable 3 coming to the PC.  It all points to Microsoft taking on a new approach to PC gaming which has just been bolstered once again by the hiring of Voodoo PC founder Rahul Sood as General Manager for System Experience.  Rahul has previously been very outspoken about Microsoft’s attitude towards PC gaming when Microsoft cancelled their cross platform plans to connect the Xbox 360 and PC in multiplayer.

Monday Night Combat Preview

Monday Night Combat is a third-person shooter developed by Uber Entertainment and published by Microsoft Games Studios.

The game was first released on Xbox Live Summer of Arcade in August 2010 and is now being released via Steam on PC on 17th January 2011.

It is currently in Beta, which you can get access to by pre-purchasing the game (for a reduced price of £8.99, down from £9.99). And the beta is pretty much finished.

One thing I must point out, is how much the game is being compared to Team Fortress 2 (TF2), which it should be really. Both games are (1) shooters, (2) funny cartoon-ee graphics, and (3) awesome! But surprisingly, MNC has the edge with the class abilities, though they are a bit repetitive between classes, but make a big difference to the game-play. And of course, the storyline – if I can call it that – of MNC is excellent and gives the game purpose. Continue Reading
