It has been well over a month now since Guild Wars 2 was released and Halloween is vastly approaching. What does this mean? It is time for its first seasonal event.
This will be a week-long event for Halloween starting October 22 in the ‘Shadow of the Mad King’ update. It is said that the update will include “a number of new features” and “new content”.
Halloween was celebrated in Tyria for times when the Mad King Thorn would cavort with his people, but he hasn’t been seen in over 250 years. The announcement hints at a possible boss fight: “Despite this, rumors persist among the populace that something wicked this way comes.”
The update will also include the previously announced paid tournaments, where players will compete in teams of five to win better than normal prizes.
You can see one of the screenshots above, but two more have been released on the event page.

I’m back and ready to round up some of the best and most interesting stories from around the web you may have missed this week (with a couple older ones thrown in there).
Creative Assembly have released 4 new screenshots from Total War: Rome 2 depicting more scenes from the battle of Carthage which has so far been the focus point for their slow trickle of release of information for the game due out next year. Depicted in these jaw dropping screenshots are the bloody, grim and dark realities of a city under siege and at war. Roman Legionnaires are seen running up the beach from their warships, engaging in a full-on assault against the Carthaginian army, including the mighty war elephants, and the Carthaginian fleet in port fully loaded with soldiers.
Check out the 4 new screenshots after the break along with the gameplay trailer which was released last week. Continue Reading

What do you get when you add together ridiculous amounts of loot, guns and enemies that yell about your mother? Another day in Pandora in Gunz Gunz Gunz……2. In 2009 Gearbox Software, who was already known for making the Half Life spin-offs and the great Brothers in Arms series, came out with the IP Borderlands. Borderlands was an action RPG that advertised as having the most guns in a video game ever! The game originally sold a decent amount of 500,000 units in the UK and US, but as the word got out the game became more popular by each year and has almost sold up to 3 million units in total. It was fair to say that by 2012 everyone needed more items to loot and more guns to shoot. Continue Reading
The decline of arcades hit pinball badly. It was already on the way out as a pinball machine is more expensive to maintain than an entirely electronic games machine, parts break with use and need replacing. Then the electronic games in the arcades got hit, with modern games consoles bringing affordable video game entertainment into the living room the queues and noise of arcades became less and less popular. These days they seem to mostly contain gambling machines and more chavs than you would believe possible. At 27 I am too young (or perhaps I missed it for other reasons) to have ever appreciated pinball in pubs and arcades, I have however played many a Pinball Simulation over the years, ranging from Space Cadet on Windows XP to the brilliant Pro Pinball: Timeshock table. Well now Silverball Studios, the creators of the Timeshock table I enjoyed so much, want to not only remake and remaster the four tables from the Pro Pinball but also create a brand new table to go with it.

Playstation Plus is Sony’s paid online service for those PSN members that want a little more out of their console. Over the past two years Sony has released hundreds of discounts on the newest downloadable releases and taken the price tag off of some classic games for loyal gamers. Now the service will be giving portable gamers a reason to dust off their PS Vitas because Playstation Plus will be adding Vita support this November. The Vita will receive full retail games, discounts and 1GB of cloud storage for no extra fee if you are already a member. For those that aren’t the price will remain $18 for three months or $50 for one year.

I apologise once again for my timekeeping (I blame FTL), it’s a wonder I make it into work on a Monday. Fortunately this week I don’t have to so I now have time to write Last Week in the Universe and round up some of the best and most interesting stories from around the web you may have missed last week.
